A Journey of Passion and Dedication: How One Teacher Found Her Calling in Montessori Education

Salwa Guirgis’ connection with our school goes back decades, as she holds the title of being the longest-serving teacher since joining the School in 1999. Her journey at our school began when her husband worked as a Mathematics Teacher in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Through him, she discovered the rich educational world of Montessori.

Intrigued by the Montessori approach, Salwa decided to attend the weekly Montessori Course sessions organised by the School’s founder, Mrs Duyker. These sessions were not just about teaching the method, but also fostering a deeper understanding of Montessori principles among parents and anyone passionate about learning. It was during these sessions that Salwa’s interest in Montessori education was ignited, and she felt a calling to be a part of this extraordinary journey.

With dedication and determination, Salwa pursued her passion for Montessori education and became a Montessori Teacher within a few years. Since then, she has been an integral part of the school community, pouring her heart and soul into guiding generations of young minds.

When asked about what sold her on Montessori education, Salwa finds it difficult to narrow it down to just a few reasons. However, her top three reasons are as follows:

  1. Individual Development: Salwa appreciates that Montessori education focuses on each child’s individual development. In this approach, every child is valued as an individual and respected for their unique qualities and abilities.
  2. Caring Community: The Montessori environment emphasises the importance of creating a caring community where children are active participants. Salwa believes that children should have a sense of belonging and responsibility within their educational community.
  3. Hands-on Learning and Independence: Salwa highlights the value of the Montessori equipment, which facilitates hands-on learning, independence, and the joy of learning. The materials used in Montessori classrooms are carefully designed to promote self-discovery and foster a love for learning.

Take a glimpse into Salwa’s inspiring journey through cherished moments.

Salwa’s decision to stay at the same school for an extended period, which is not uncommon in Montessori schools, can be attributed to her happiness and satisfaction. She feels supported by the School’s amazing principals, as well as her colleagues. Furthermore, she feels valued and appreciated by the students and their families.

While many things have changed during her tenure at the school, such as the introduction of technology, changes in the physical landscape including buildings, and fluctuations in student numbers, Salwa believes that some aspects have remained constant. These include the school’s commitment to pure Montessori principles, the presence of excellent staff who remain loyal to the school, and the heart-warming culture of the people within the school community.

Salwa describes your school as “empowering,” emphasising that it empowers both staff and students to learn and grow. This suggests that the school provides an environment and educational approach that instils confidence, encourages personal development, and nurtures the abilities and potential of both the staff and students. By fostering a sense of empowerment, the school likely promotes autonomy, self-motivation, and a belief in one’s capabilities, leading to a more enriching and fulfilling learning experience for everyone involved.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Salwa for her unwavering dedication and passion for Montessori education. Her journey, spanning decades, has enriched the lives of countless students and left an indelible mark on our school community.
